Biossance's Clean Academy has garnered support from fellow clean beauty brands.
Farmacy, Ilia, Youth to the People, Follain, Aether, Weleda, Suntegrity and Ursa Major have all partnered with Biossance for the second series of its educational platform. Clean Academy's second season aims to dive deep into ingredients commonly found in products such as cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens. The video series, available today on YouTube and Clean Academy's web site, are informed by Google search data: In 2019, searches for popular skin-care ingredients grew by 27 percent, reflecting increased interest from consumers for ingredient knowledge.
"There’s so many terms within the space, I think it got to be too many terms for the average person to be able to digest or understand," Catherine Gore, president of Biossance, told WWD in October, when the company first launched Clean Academy. "Everyone defines it in a different way no one knows what the true source is of all of the information. That’s our mission: selfless education to bring clarity to the consumer."
Led by "Queer Eye" star Jonathan Van Ness, Clean Academy's first season reached 100 million people, racking up 22,000 views and 10,000 reviews, according to Gore, who spoke at WWD's Digital Beauty Forum on Feb. 12. The series is part of the recent streaming boom sweeping beauty. Driven by a demand for beauty and wellness content, industry players such as Gucci Westman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are heading to platforms — YouTube, Netflix and Quibi, respectively — to share content that is educational yet entertaining.
Clean Academy is the first of several steps Biossance is taking to establish itself as a leader in the clean beauty space. Next month, the Amyris-owned company will launch a skin-care ingredient index that will include clinical studies.
"There are definitely ingredient libraries out there, but there are none that are totally dedicated to clean ingredients and their efficacy," Gore said.
In July, Biossance will host an awards gala for brands, celebrities and change-makers it believes are at the forefront of the sustainability movement. It has also established an endowment and will award scholarships to students making a difference in STEM and sustainability.
