Winter is on the approach and with it comes the beginning of cold and flu season. Vitamin C, though not a cure, has been found to slightly reduce some symptoms of a cold when incorporated into a nutrient-rich and balanced diet.

While vitamin C supplements are widely available, it is a naturally occurring nutrient that can be found in a number of fresh foods.

Most typically, people associate good sources of vitamin C with citrus fruit, such as oranges.

However, there is another fruit that you might not routinely pick up at the supermarket bursting with vitamin C – as well as many other vital nutrients.

Pomegranates, and their juice, are packed full of vitamin C, vitamin K, and potassium, as well as several other key nutrients.

Eating one pomegranate gives you about 28 mg of vitamin C, which equates to almost 50 percent of your daily recommended intake (DRI).

According to a study by PubMed Central, the fruit may also have several benefits for your body including the potential to lower the risk of various diseases.

Categorised as a berry, pomegranates are filled with hundreds of edible seeds.

It is within these seeds that vital vitamins, as well as fibre and even protein, can be found.

One cup of pomegranate seeds contains around seven grams of fibre and three grams of protein.

There is enough vitamin C in one cup of seeds to meet 30 percent of your DRI, enough vitamin K to meet 36 percent of your DRI, enough folate to meet 16 percent of your DRI, and enough potassium to meet 12 percent of your DRI.

However, eating pomegranate seeds raw isn’t the only way to make the most of these nutrients.

Thanks to pomegranates naturally sweet flavour, the fruit also makes a delicious juice.

Along with helping boost your vitamin intake, pomegranate juice also acts as an antioxidant.

This is due to the high level of punicalagins found in pomegranates.

Punicalagins are very powerful antioxidants, with pomegranates believed to have more antioxidant properties than red wine or green tea according to PubMed Central.

What is vitamin C good for?

Vitamin C has several important functions to help keep the body strong and healthy.

According to the NHS, the nutrient helps to protect and maintain cells, aids healthy skin, blood vessels and cartilage and even help with wound healing.

However, too much vitamin C can lead to digestion issues or diarrhoea.
