Eating grapefruit could help to improve the health of your heart, according to dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
It works to lower the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol in the body – particularly red grapefruit.
Reducing your cholesterol is crucial for avoiding some deadly complications, including heart attacks and strokes.
“Best known for containing vitamin C, which supports the immune system, citrus fruits do far more than just fight infections,” they wrote in their book ‘Eat Better Live Longer – Understand What Your Body Needs To Stay Healthy’.
“They are linked with everything from protection against heart disease and cancer to slowing down cataract development.
“Studies show that components of citrus fruits may help lower cholesterol.
“Consuming citrus juices regularly has also been linked to lower cholesterol levels in humans.
“In a study, red grapefruit reduced total and LDL [or bad] cholesterol twice as much as the yellow variety.”
Everyone should aim to eat one portion of citrus fruits every day, added the nutritionists.
It’s best to eat the whole fruit – as opposed to having a glass of juice – so you get all of the fibre.
The peel of citrus fruits also contain considerably more antioxidants than the juice.
Meanwhile, you could also lower your blood pressure by eating more yogurt, berries, bananas and avocados, they said.
But, it’s crucial to limit the amount of salt in your diet, as salt raises blood pressure. Everyone should aim to eat less than 6g of salt in a single day – the equivalent to about a teaspoonful.
Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every week is one of the best way to make sure you lead a long and healthy life.
