Hair loss treatment: Dandelion decreases oxidative free radicals to increase hair growth

This Morning: Dr Ranj discusses treatments for hair loss

Hair loss can be an extremely frustrating occurrence. What was once a steady growth suddenly has now stopped and one begins to notice either thinning out of the hair, patches of missing hair or complete loss and as such baldness. The root of the problem when it comes to hair loss is often down to scalp inflammation and using dandelion root can help with this and therefore increase hair growth.

Dandelion root is a rich source of vitamin A, C and E as well as B-complex vitamins.

Dandelion also contains choline, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, biotin, and calcium.

All of these ingredients play a significant role in making one’s hair healthy, stronger and to help stimulate hair growth.

The polysaccharides from dandelion possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties that play a promising role in this regard.

The bioactive compounds in dandelions may help fight inflammation and even cancer.

Cells treated with dandelion compounds were found to have lower levels of inflammation.

Dandelion works by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are compounds usually involved in the body’s inflammation.

A different approach is taken in an ongoing study of the role of signalling cytokines in combating hair loss, said Dr Neil Sadick, a clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

He continued: “They are associated with the inhibition of hair follicles that are genetically programmed to fall out and the stimulation of new hair follicle formation.

“Yet other studies are examining the effect of scalp inflammation on hair loss.

“Using a holistic supplement approach to decrease inflammation, decrease oxidative free radical damage to hair follicles, and decrease hormone-induced stresses as well as environmental stresses to the hair follicle could work.”

Dandelions help to reduce the production of pro inflammatory cytokines, which are compounds usually involved in the body’s inflammation.

“There are many different causes of hair loss,” says Dr Deborah Scott, assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

“Some are associated with inflammation in the body.”

This is why dandelion root may help with hair loss due to its inflammation fighting capabilities.

You can make a dandelion root infused conditioning oil by putting a tablespoon of the root grated into a cup of warm extra virgin olive oil.

Allow it to infuse for a couple of weeks before using it treat hair.

After shampooing, the dandelion hair rinse will help remove excess grease, soothe an itchy scalp and help to get rid of dandruff.

Pour the tepid rinse, which is simply dandelion water made from boiling either the leaves or roots onto the scalp and allow to soak into the scalp and hair.

Rinse out and then condition hair as normal or simply apply hair rinse after shampooing and don’t wash it out.

The end result will be thicker and shinier hair increasing hair growth.
