Best supplements for the heart – 5p a day capsules to protect against high blood pressure
The heart is used to pump blood around the body, and having a healthy heart is crucial to a healthy life, as organs around the body need a constant supply of blood for fresh oxygen. You could improve the health of your heart by regularly taking garlic supplements, it’s been claimed.
Garlic has been claimed to have a number of health benefits, including boosting the immune system and protecting against Alzheimer’s disease.
But, a daily garlic supplement could also help to lower your blood pressure, according to dietitian Joe Leech.
Garlic is believed to increase the body’s production of nitric oxide.
This helps to smooth and relax muscles, which subsequently allows blood vessels to dilate.

“Cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes are the world’s biggest killers,” said Leech.
He wrote on medical website Healthline: “High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most important drivers of these diseases.
“Human studies have found garlic supplements to have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
“Supplement doses must be fairly high to have the desired effects. The amount needed is equivalent to about four cloves of garlic per day.”

You may need to use more than 600mg of aged garlic extract to see a marked difference in your blood pressure, scientists have revealed.
It may also take around 24 weeks for the garlic to take effect.
However, garlic may also lower your risk of heart disease in another way, too.
It’s been claimed to reduce the amount of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in the body, which subsequently helps to maintain a healthy blood flow to the heart.
Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of high blood pressure by taking daily magnesium supplements.
Magnesium helps to relax the muscles that line the arteries, which subsequently dilates blood vessels.
Adding magnesium supplements to your diet could lower blood pressure by as much as 19/11mmHg, scientists have claimed.
Everybody could benefit from taking the capsules, even if they have a normal blood pressure, nutritionists have claimed.
High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, as you may not even know you’re at risk of the condition.
But, some of the earliest symptoms of hypertension include severe headaches and dizziness.
Everyone over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked.
