Million deaths due to too little fruit and vegetables
Preliminary results of a new study suggest that inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption each year causes millions of deaths from heart disease and strokes. According to estimates, one out of seven deaths could be due to plenty of fruit cases, avoid, and one of twelve by enough vegetables.
Based on data from the year 2010, scientists at the Tufts University estimated that in the United States to a little fruit every year, worldwide nearly 1.3 million deaths from stroke and more than 520,000 deaths due to arteriosclerosis, a narrowing of the coronary vessels responsible for inadequate vegetable consumption contributes to the estimated to be about 200,000 cases of death due to a stroke and more than 800,000 deaths by atherosclerosis.
The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Baltimore. They are derived from nutrition surveys, food availability as well as data on causes of death in 113 countries, representing approximately 82 percent of the world’s population.
Fruits and vegetables are important sources of dietary fiber, potassium, Magnesium, antioxidants and phenols, which lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Based on nutritional guidelines, and studies to cardiovascular disease, the researchers recommend 300 grams of fruit per day, which is roughly equivalent to two small Apples. Besides, 400 grams of vegetables per day are recommended, so about as much as three cups of raw carrots.
